Flexicon’s Safe and Secure Cable Protection Solution for UK’s Largest Prison

Flexicon worked with Precast Concrete Structures to deliver cable protection and containment within prefabricated concrete walls and ceilings during the construction of the new prison in Wrexham County Borough.

HM Prison Berwyn, completed in Autumn last year, is the largest in the UK housing up to 2,106 category C prisoners in almost 1,500 cells.

HM Prision

The Design for Manufacture and Assembly Project saw the walls and ceiling for each prison cell constructed off site complete with fully contained services and then delivered for assembly.

Says Paul Smith, Technical Manager for Precast Concrete Structures: “Providing a precast concrete wall or ceiling that can be simply slotted into place and then connected to all services involves a lot of planning and co-ordination throughout the supply chain.

“For the electrical services we specified flexible conduit rather than rigid stainless steel because it is easier to fit it through the rebar steel cage, particularly when some of the conduit runs could be 3.5 metres long.

“For offsite manufacture it is important to work closely with the supply chain to ensure that we deliver an optimum solution. Flexicon worked with us from the beginning to provide the cable protection and containment solution.  In fact we were so impressed with their knowledge and innovation that we will be working with them to develop special solutions for future projects.

Each conduit terminates into a junction box, which is also contained within the structure of the wall.  Both ends are then sealed before the concrete is poured to form the structure.  The complete sections were then delivered to site for assembly.

Precast Concrete Structures used Flexicon’s FPP flexible conduit, which being resistant to acid and alkaline environments is ideal for applications buried in concrete.  The FPA fittings used are tamper proof requiring a tool to remove them, have a high tensile strength, an IP rating of IP66 and are fast and easy to fit with a one-piece construction making it less likely that parts will be dropped or lost onsite.”

HM Prison Conduit

Says Tim Creedon, Sales and Marketing Director for Flexicon: “This is a great example of why it pays to use a British based manufacturer. We can input into the process and advise accordingly on the correct specification to both provide long-term cable containment and protection plus make installation simpler and faster saving valuable time. We can also deal with the logistics of deliveries for both off site and on site construction. ”

“And in the spirit of continuous improvement and innovation we carry on working with installers and specifiers to further improve both the process and the final installation.  This may be as simple as providing pre-cut lengths of conduit to site or even developing a bespoke solution to meet particular requirements.”

Flexicon has over 60 flexible conduit systems available as standard and can also work with customers to develop bespoke solutions. For further information contact: Flexicon ltd, Roman Way, Coleshill, Birmingham. B46 1HG.  Tel:  01675 466900.  Email: FlexiconSales@atkore.com.

Flexible Conduit Specification Guide for Hazardous Areas from Flexicon

Responding to the demand to safely protect power and data cabling in today’s interconnected world, Flexicon has launched its most extensive flexible conduit Products and Solutions Guide for Hazardous Areas.

Says Tim Creedon, Sales & Marketing Director for Flexicon:  “Failure to protect power and or data cabling within Hazardous Areas with the potential risk of explosion can be catastrophic for safety and operational efficiency.”

“It has never been more important to get cable protection specification right to ensure on-going operation throughout a system’s life and protect people, property and processes.  Hazardous Areas, by their nature, present many risks and depending on the application the hazards faced can vary enormously.  The risk of explosion due to operating environments, flammable liquids, gases or dust, hazards such as ingress of water, corrosion, exposure to chemicals, impact, crushing, fire, UV light, vandalism can all impact safety and operational efficiency.”

“Our new specification guide features 16 different cable protection solutions for use in Hazardous Areas.  The guide makes it easy to correctly specify a system of both conduit and gland or fitting to match the nature and magnitude of the hazards faced.  It is important to realise that different applications can be exposed to different hazards, so there is no one size fits all solution.”

The 46-page guide highlights many of the potential hazards faced by cabling, using simple icons.  It is focussed on product solutions for hazardous areas and features Flexicon’s range of Flameproof Barrier Glands with the latest IECEx, ATEX and CU-TR certification. It also features conduits for Hygienic applications and Flexicon’s new Stainless Steel annular corrugated conduit systems, FSS and FSSBRD.

As a UK Manufacturer, Flexicon offer over 60 different flexible conduit systems to choose from. This guide is focussed on solutions and systems for use in Hazardous Areas and contains products and systems that have been tested and certified against the relevant Industry standards and approvals. With an easy to use selection table, specifiers and engineers can quickly compare performance properties of the sixteen different conduit systems and different glands and fittings.

Continues Creedon: “It is not enough to select the correct flexible conduit; you also have to match it to the right fitting according to the application.  It is often the conduit to fitting and fitting to equipment interfaces that are crucial for protection and this guide ensures that you get it right.”

Flexicon has continued to develop a number of different specification tools to help get cable protection right over the long term.  These range from paper based solutions guides, online catalogues, and interactive online selection tools including an App, through to technical help via phone or onsite. There are also sector dedicated brochures for the Rail Industry and Hygienic Applications.

With more choice for the customer comes an increased opportunity to incorrectly specify, therefore it is paramount that we provide effective tools to aid specification to fully realise the true benefits of flexible conduit for cable protection.”

Flexicon’s New Non-Metallic Conduit Fitting Offers Superior System Integrity for Performance and Safety Critical Applications.

Flexicon will be showcasing a new non-metallic fitting – FLEXICON ULTRA that it claims offers better system integrity than anything currently available on the market, from its stand G03 in Hall 16 at this year’s Hannover Messe. It has been designed with input and feedback from customers working in technically demanding environments.

The company has many years’ experience working within a variety of industries including Machinery & Automation, Transportation & Utilities, providing innovative and reliable cable protection solutions.

Says Tim Creedon, Sales and Marketing Director for Flexicon, “System integrity is essential for the functionality and operation of performance and safety critical applications.

Customers are looking for reliability and simplicity. High performance conduit fittings typically consist of multiple or separate parts which can add complexity during installation. Ingress Protection and Dynamic performance are critical factors and are often a common reason for Cable protection failures. Vibration, constant movement & sudden inertia are also elements which can compromise system performance.

Flexicon ULTRA is a one piece fitting solution which offers fit and forget assurance when it comes to performance and integrity. It features integrated sealing technology which provides superior Ingress Protection levels of IP68 and IP69, with both fine pitch and coarse pitch Flexicon Conduits. The fitting has been tested for IP68 for up to 72hrs at a depth of 1m.

“Exposure to extreme and diverse hazards is commonplace within many industries, leading to a requirement for technical solutions rather than just the supply of components. Systems can potentially fail if the cabling is not adequately protected from hazards which might include rain, snow and ice, washdown processes, UV light, thermal cycling and differing temperatures, vibration, impact, abrasion resistance and dynamic pull of strength.”

“Understanding such risks and hazards has enabled us to design and develop market leading products that exceed our customers’ expectations offering reassurance and continuous operability. We have worked with major manufacturers to extensively test our products to validate the capability of our solutions.”

Flexicon products are independently tested to extremes to offer Customers assurance that our products will perform as expected.
