Flexicon helps fast track students

Flexicon has helped a team of young engineers develop a hybrid propulsion system for its Formula Student racing car, by providing a highly flexible conduit system to protect the cabling.

LURacing finished second in the alternative drivetrain class, and won e.on's “Innovation in drivetrain and enviromental technologies” at a recent race event held at Silverstone.

Using an 18kW electric three phase motor and a 250cc gasoline engine working in parallel, protection of the cabling was vital.  Flexicon supplied its highly flexible liquid tight LPCO conduit with compression fittings.

The system has an ingress protection rating of IP67, a smooth wipe clean surface and can be used for temperatures between -5oC and 700C.  The system also had to be suitable for 400/600V systems.

The electric motor is powered by a 3.5 kWh battery composed from lithium-ion cells that delivers several hundred amps during acceleration.  The car features regenerative braking, plug in charging, an automatic gearshift and clutch, and a sophisticated CAN based information system.

Says Chris Poulton, export manager at Flexicon:  “Protection of cabling is vital in any automotive application, but even more so when the vehicle relies on electrical power for its propulsion.  We are delighted that that this team enjoyed such success in the recent Formula Student race.

”In a small way this proves the ongoing viability of hybrid propulsion and just as importantly it has introduced the technology to tomorrow’s generation of engineers.”
