Flexicon Conduit Systems exceed vibration and shock standard for Rail equipment

Independent testing has seen a wide range of Flexicon’s flexible conduit systems exceed the demanding vibration and shock standards required by the rail industry.

Already used for major rail projects, an independent laboratory tested both metallic and non-metallic systems to EN 61373:1999 to the higher class 2 vibration and shock levels demanded for bogie use. It means that the conduit and fittings can be used anywhere on a rail vehicle and mounted in any axis to protect critical power and data cables.

Both vibration and shock can be extremely damaging to electrical equipment.  Conduit systems need to be capable of withstanding the forces seen during rail vehicle operation so that it can protect the cabling from such forces.

Says Ian Gibson, technical director for Flexicon:  “These standards are probably the most demanding vibration and shock tests applicable.  The rail industry generally requires more rigorous testing than any other.  We tested 14 different conduits all with different fittings to demonstrate their resistance to such forces.

“It means that we can offer a wide range of different conduits for a number of applications in the rail industry.  Vibration and shock are just two possible hazards that conduit must protect cabling from.  Other considerations may be IP ratings, crush and impact forces, abrasion and temperature.  In specific areas, conduit systems for rail applications are required to be of a high performance, especially regarding the aspects of ignitability, smoke and toxic fume emissions in the event of a fire.”

The conduits and fittings were tested for functional endurance, long life endurance and shock.

Achilles Link Up has assessed and audited Flexicon’s design, manufacture and supply of conduit systems for use on both national rail and London Underground applications.
