Fan Fare for Flexicon as it helps protect Intercontinental Sea Tunnel

Flexicon has supplied Fläkt Woods, the industrial fan manufacturer, with high specification cable protection for the installation of powerful ventilation fans for the ‘project of the century’, the first sea tunnel between two continents.

Fläkt Woods was selected to provide specialist fans for the Marmaray tunnel rail project in Turkey, which links the European and Asian shores of Istanbul passing underneath the Bosphorus Strait.  The scheme has been noted as the world’s biggest transportation infrastructure build, spanning 13.6 kilometers.

To provide the best possible cable protection for its fans, which play a vital role in the ventilation and overall safety of the tunnel, Fläkt Woods turned to the ‘Made in Britain’ specialist manufacturer, Flexicon.  Supplying three high specification flexible conduit systems, the company was able to meet Fläkt Woods’ understandably demanding requirements.

Fläkt Woods designed the fans to operate at up to 300°C for up to two hours, which enabled EN12101-3 certification.  This would allow evacuation during a fire that would remain clear long enough for all personnel to exit safely. During such an incident it is vital to protect the supply cabling, to keep the fans running. Flexicon’s low fire hazard (LFHU) conduit was selected to protect the fans power cables against the potential high temperatures.

The flexible conduit within the fans also needed to provide protection in hazardous areas. Flexicon’s LTP conduit system, with EXD barrier glands were able to meet the ATEX and IEC Ex approvals needed to provide the highest level of protection within potentially explosive environments.

Flexicon has also supplied nylon corrugated flexible conduit with FPA fittings, which were used on the ‘low temperature’ installations.

The specialist fans generate a high velocity discharge of airflow through the tunnel, meaning that all cable protection systems needed to offer high vibration resistance and extremely high tensile strength as standard.

Tim Creedon, sales and marketing director from Flexicon said, “Working with Fläkt Woods to supply them with such high performing cable protection systems has been a real challenge, but one we have reveled in, as it has given us an opportunity to show how technically capable our products are. In recent years we have invested heavily in product development and ensured that however demanding an application may be, we have the cable protection solution to meet it.”

Philip Walker, Project Management Director for Tunnels and Metros stated ‘This was a very prestigious job for Fläkt Woods.  To be able to count on our suppliers, in this case Flexicon, enabled Fläkt Woods to maintain it’s high and stringent standards to deliver high quality products to our customers’.
